was so los warIch lebe noch und mir geht's wunderbar. War viel los in den letzten Monaten. Eigentlich permanentes Urlaubs planen. Und der Zustand hält glücklicherweise an! Hier mal eine schnelle Zusammenfassung, wer alles da war und bald gibt es Neues! Grüße I am still alive and doing very well! A lot of activities lately. I have been planning holidays permanently and I still do! Here a short summary of who came to see us in Japan. And I hope there will be news about further trips soon. Cheers Zuerst kam die Manja mal in Japan vorbei und wir haben eine wunderbare Woche unter Kirschblüten und in heißen Quellen miteinander verbracht! First came my old schoolfriend Manja! We spent a wonderful week under the cherry blossoms and in hot springs!
Danach kam der Robert und mit ihm und einigen anderen haben wir dann den Süden Honshus (Yamaguchi) erkundet. Hagi, die alte Samurai Stadt mit nettem Sandstrand war Balsam für die Tokyo-Gestressten. Then came my old university-friend Robert! We went down to the South of Honshu (Yamaguchi) with some friends to enjoy Japanese beach and culture in the old samurai town of Hagi. What a pleasure to relax from busy Tokyo-life.
Und zu guter letzt gab es noch Besuch von Marsha und Karin, Avits New York Mädels. Gemeinsam haben sie den Norden Honshus erkundet und ich konnte sie übers Wochenende in ein 200 Jahre altes gemischtes Onsen (heiße Quellen Resort) begleiten. Das Bier nackt neben dem rauschenden Wasserfall war besonders lecker ;) And finally Avit had visitors from his New York girls Marsha and Karin. Together they discovered the North of Honshu (pure nature). I joined for the weekend in an ancient mixed Onsen place deep in the mountains. Drinking the beer nackedly next to the waterfall was great ;)
Shanghai Baby
Olala, gerade noch war Weihnachten und nun ist schon Ostern…Ich hoffe, ihr erfreut euch alle an der Rückkehr von Sonnenschein und Grün. Ich hatte das Vergnügen das lange Wochenende in Shanghai mit leckeren asiatischen Maultaschen, entspannenden Massagen und im Kontrast von Neu und Alt zu verbringen. High-Tech-Hochhäuser, historisch europäische Viertel und typisch asiatische Straßenmärkte. Gleich neben dem urkommunistischen Platz des Volkes stand ein Hochhaus mit der Firmenaufschrift „Capitals“. Das Essen war großartig. Im italienischen Restaurant fühlt man sich wie in einer Seitengasse von Florenz, das marokkanische Restaurant hingegen liegt mitten im Park im See. Und überall soviel mehr Ausländer als in Tokyo. Da vergisst man schnell, dass man eigentlich in China ist. Die kleine Reise war eine spannend auch wenn’s am Anfang ganz schön frustrierend aussah. Sehr spät angekommen empfing uns die berühmte Flusspromenade stockfinster und menschenleer. Später haben wir dann erfahren, dass zum Strom sparen ab 22.30 die ganze Beleuchtung ausgeschaltet wird und die meisten Chinesen zeitig schlafen gehen. Ebenfalls amüsant war die Direktheit mit der man von Verkäufern und Kellnern bedient wird. So nah an Japan und doch so gegenteilig…
Ops, the last blog entry was Christmas and now we are having Eastern...Well, I hope you’re enjoying the return of green and sun. I had the pleasure to spend the weekend in Shanghai with delicious dumplings, pleasant massages and high contrasts between high-tech-buildings, old-Europe-like areas and typical asian street markets. Next to communist people’s square a huge office building with the letters “capitals” on it, good food from anywhere in the world in restaurants that make you feel like you where in the country of its origin and many more foreigners than in Tokyo. It was a joyful discovery even so the first impression was bit sad. We arrived very late and decided to take a cab to the historical water front. But there was nobody around and everything was dark. – We learned later that the illumination is turned off after 10.30pm for power saving reasons and that most people go to sleep early. It was also funny is to see the straightness of Chinese service staff...So close to Japan but very different.

pyramid & sledgeAllen treuen Lesern ein frohes neues Jahr! Heute gibt's für die nicht-Deutschen eine kleine Lehrstunde zum Thema Weihnachtspyramide. Das kennt man im Ausland tatsächlich nicht! Und danach noch ein kleines Starvideo von meiner Schwester und mir beim Rodeln ;) Hey everybody out there. I hope you had a good christmas time and you'll be blessed with luck and happiness next year. I am spending those special holidays back home in good old Germany. And there is two things I want to introduce to you about our Christmas habits today. Firstly there is "Weihnachtspyramide". I just lately learned that this very typical Christmas decoration is totally unknown to my non-German friends. However, as a piece of ancient technology it is worth to be known. Basically it is a candle-driven rotating wooden structure that holds little angles, santa clauses or figures of the holy family. We only own some of the simplest versions but these structures may reach 1m in hight and include 5 levels! Secondly, when I was a little girl each year after all the eating and the presents my family liked to spend the 3rd Christmas day outside in the snow. The nearby mountains are always snow-covered in wintertime. But as all 4 of us never learnt how to ski we have been enjoying sledging a lot. Today we revived that tradition and had so much fun... How much is the doughnut?

Letzte Woche auf meiner kleinen Design-Konferenzreise habe ich einen neuen Unterschied zwischen Tokyo und HongKong entdeckt. In beiden Städten findet man die berühmten amerikanischen Doughnut-Cafes namens KrispyKreme. Die Tokyo-Filiale eröffnete vor gut einem Jahr und noch immer stehen die Leute da täglich Schlange als gäbe es Bananen ;) Nimmt man einen Stundenlohn von 1400Yen pro Stunde an, dann sind diese Doughnuts einfach zu teuer, denn Zeit ist Geld! Letzten Sonntag beim Spaziergang durch HongKong stieß ich aber auch dort auf einen dieser Doughnuttempel und endlich bot sich die Chance den wahren Wert dieses Gebäcks zu testen. Zugegebenermaßen war es wirklich lecker aber nicht in einem Maße, dass es den "virtuellen Tokyo-Preis" rechtfertigen könnte. Nun meine Quizfragen für euch:1. Wieviel würdest du in einen frischen KrispyKreme Doughnut investieren?
I found a new servere difference between Tokyo and HongKong during my design-conference-trip last week. Both cities house the famous American doughnut-chain KrispyKreme. The first Tokyo branch opened a year a ago and is still a popular lining-spot. I never tried one because "time is money!" and assuming an income of 1400 Yen/hour these doughnuts really are too expensive. 1. How much would you spend on a fresh KrispyKreme doughnut? Onsen-Trip

Eines der größten Vergnügen, die Japan bietet, sind seine heißen Quellen. Da man hier an einer hoch-aktivem Plattengrenze gegründet hat, sprudelt sprichwörtlich, wo auch immer man bohrt, heißes Wasser an die Oberfläche. Grundsätzlich gibt es folgende Onsentypen: Wir hatten dieses Wochenende das Vergnügen in einem outdoor Wannentyp-Onsen, direkt neben Fluss und Wasserfall, mit weißem, nach faulen Eiern riechendem Wasser, außer Sichtweite von Tokyo, tief in den herbstfarbenen Bergen auszuspannen. Dazu gab es traditionelles Abendessen und Frühstück und einen großen japanischen Tatami-Raum, der 6 internationalen Vertretern (leider fehlte Afrika) Raum gab um friedlich beim Carcassonne-Spiel Kräfte zu messen.
Basically there is following types of Onsen: Now what we enjoyed this weekend was an outdoor tubstyle one, next to river and waterfall, with white water that smelled like rotten eggs, deep in the autumn-colored-mountains. Plus traditionell dinner and breakfast and a japanese Tatami-room that gave space to 6 international representives (unfortunately Africa was missing) that fought each other peacefully in Carcassonne.

Zusammen gezählt macht das nun 3 Jahre in diesem irren Land. Was aber tatsächlich beachtlich ist, ist dass die Idee es wirklich zum Produkt geschafft hat. Wer ein gutes Auge mitbringt findet uns auch zwischen all den diesjährigen IF communication design awards. Ach ja und im Video zu sehen sind meine Kollegin und unsere zwei Lieblings-Software-Ingenieure. Und wer ein treuer Leser ist, erkennt Sugimoto san vielleicht von den Reitbildern wieder. German SummerJaja, kurz war's aber schön. 10 Tage im August daheim mit Familie and Freunden. Mutti war überglücklich uns vier vereint durch die Sächsische Schweiz wandern zu sehen. Wie früher...Und der Vati war glücklich über's wohlverdiente "Gipfelbier" ;) Home sweet home. The 10 days in August with family and friends were so nice even so the time was much too short. My mother was delighted when the four of us went on a family hiking trip in the nearby mountains as we used to do when I was a child. And my father was happy about his well-earned "peak-beer" ;) "Prost!".
Ein anderes Großereignis meines Heimaturlaubs war die Hochzeit einer Schulfreundin und die schöne Hochzeitsparty in Feld und am See. Es tut mir ja leid für Sushi&co aber das Essen war einfach um Welten leckerer! Another great event during my home-holidays was the wedding of a school friend and the wedding party in the fields and on a very nice lake. Sorry to Shushi & co but wow the food was sooo good. I gained 1 pound in 1 week...
Wenn ich mir diese Bilder so anschaue, dann glaub ich schon, dass wir deutschen Menschen ganz schön verrückt nach Naturgenuss sind. Was für ein Kontrast zum Tokyo-Lebensstil. Just by seeing my own pictures it seems that Germans are really crazy about nature. What a contrast to Tokyo-lifestyle. (Ich hoffe es stößt sich keiner an der Bildqualität. Man kann GIF-Animationen nicht mit mehr Farben exportieren aber vielleicht hat ja jemand eine andere Idee wie man anderweitig kleine Foto-Slide-Shows in den Blog bekommt? Btw I hope you don't mind the not so great quality of these photo-animations. Its not possible to export GIF animations with more colours. Do you know another way to make fancy little picture-slide-shows?) Kamakura-GirlsJaja, wirklich up-to-date ist mein Blog nicht. Es gibt soviele Dinge, die ich gern zeigen möchte aber mir fehlt schlichtweg die Zeit, denn wenn dann doch einmal Zeit ist, muss ich doch die vielen interessanten Ort und Dinge anschauen gehen, die ich bisher noch nicht erkundet habe. Heute gibt es erstmal ein paar Bilder von den Kamakura-girls Momoe, Nadege und mir an einem herrlichen Sonntag im August. Es war mein 8. Besuch in Kamakura und der Ort ist und bleibt mein Lieblingsausflugsziel im Großraum Tokyo. I know I know this blog is not really up-to-date. So many things I want to show you but no time because it all goes to even more nice exciting things I gotta do and see ;) I hope to present some impressions from my holidays at home in Germany to you soon. But before here pictures from a day that I did enjoy very much one month ago - girl's day with Nadege und Momoe in Kamakura! It was my 8th visit there and it is still my most favorite weekend spot around Tokyo.

Glück der Erde 2Nun kommt endlich der Beweis meiner neuen Samstagmorgenbeschäftigung! Gestern habe ich mich wieder völlig verschlafen aus dem Bett gequält um im Gegenzug dazu arme Reittiere quälen zu gehen. Nach zwei Wochen Heimatbesuchspause hing ich zwar ziemlich steif im Sattel aber das sehen ja nur die Profis...Wird schon noch. Here the proof for my every Saturday morning activity. Though terribly jetlaged from my visit in Germany I managed to get out of bed to torture poor horses again. After the two weeks break I've been sitting way too stiffly in the saddle but only the pros of you will see that...Well, give me a few more weeks.
Btw the charming young man's name is Shoushou. He entertains me so well during the time when we beginners have to watch the big boss riding...(yarn) Yesterday we observed an aunt trying to eat a dead green bug. He said this was disgusting when I said it was its breakfast. Than he suddenly went to get a box full of grasshoppers he had collected lately. He took out a hopper, told me to bring my camera and than started possing pretending to eat it. He rechecked each picture and asked for more and more...He is 4 and one of my best mates here. Our conversations are very inspiring as our level of Japanese is the same!
das Glück der Erde...Hab ich schon erwähnt, dass ich seit 2 Monaten einem neuen Hobby nach gehe? Jeden Samstag quäle ich mich - meist vom Freitagabend noch leicht gekatert - um 6.30 aus dem Bett, um mich Punkt 8.30 draußen auf dem Land auf den Rücken eines der Panasonic Pferde zu werfen. Ja nein, ich war niemals ein Pferdenarr, aber es macht mir erstaunlicherweise sehr sehr viel Spaß! Vielleicht lass ich euch bald ein paar Bilder von mir beim Ärgern von "Black Beauty" im entsprechenden Outfit sehen...Bis dahin hier erstmal eine "missübersetzte" und doch irgendwie wahrlich japanische Lebensphilosophie.

Auch hier ist endlich der Sommer angekommen und mit ihm die Zeit der Feuerwerke! Millionen von Menschen belagern in der einen Woche Tokyos, in der anderen Yokohamas Hafenareal mit blauen Planen, Reissnacks und Dosenbier um 1,5h steuergeldfinanziertes "Blumenfeuer" zu genießen. Eigentlich eine große Verschwendung. Aber eine sehr sehr schöne...
Finally summer has also come to Japan and with it the time of fireworks! Millions of people have growded Tokyo Bay last week and will growd Yokohama Bay tomorrow with their blue plastic blankets, rice snacks and canned beer to enjoy 1.5 hours tax-finanzed "Flower-Fire". It is quite a waste but a very very nice one... [omochi kaeri desu ka?]Reis zum Frühstück, zum Mittag, zum Abendbrot. 3xtäglich und dann ist man ein echter Japaner. Aber soweit wollen wir es nicht kommen lassen, denn zum Glück gibt es auch hier Bäckereien. Bäckereien als Inbegriff französischen Lebensgefühls mit Baguettestangen in Originallänge. Rice for breakfast, for lunch, for diner. 3times a day and you’ll become a real Japanese. Fortunately bakeries all over Tokyo help to avoid this from happening. Bakeries here are the embodiment of french lifestyle and so of course they do serve the world’s longest white bread. 
Ich habe das Bild übrigens nicht in die Breite gezogen! KeroKeroDer chocolate-frog schwelgt noch immer in Erinnerungen an New York...unter anderem weil er da einige seiner "Froschverwandten" im American Museum of Natural History getroffen hat. Die große Bandbreite an Farben, Arten der Fortbewegung, Nahrungsaufnahme, Fortpflanzung etc. bei den Fröschen ist wahrlich beeindruckend. Und eigentlich sie sind doch viel hübscher als ihr Ruf. Apropos Ruf...KeroKero! The chocolate-frog is still pretty much under the impression of the NY-trip...also because there it met some members of its frog-family in the American Museum of Natural History. The varity of their colours, ways to swallow food or to jump and to breed is incredibly huge. And unlike their reputation most of them are really cute, aren't they? I just say...KeroKero!
New York New YorkKim & Tobias' Hochzeit - wunderbar romantisch. Sogar die stärksten Kerle hatten Tränen der Rührung in den Augen. Und für uns schüchterne Deutsche gabs Lehrstunden im "ordentlich-Feiern"... Kim's & Tobias' wedding - so wonderful touching. It brought tears even into the toughest guy's eyes. And the German's took lesson's in partying from "the big black family".
...und nach dem Kater 5 Tage NY-Abenteuer! ...after the hang-over 5 days NY-adventure!
Eine fazinierende Stadt. Viel älter, chaotischer, komplexer als erwartet und von solcher Charakterstärke. An amazing city. Older, busier, more complex than I expected and with so much character.
Im Meltingpot NY fühlt sich sogar der Tourist einheimisch. Das Abenteur an den gefährlichen Flecken NY's habe ich vergeblich gesucht, sie sind zur Rarität geworden... The melting pot makes even the tourist feel native. I was ambitiously looking for the adventure in dangerous places but there wasn't any to be found...
...und so richtig Spaß gemacht hat es vor allem dank Kims alter Stanford-Freunde, die mich aus dem schlimmsten aller Hostel, in denen ich bisher genächtigt habe, erretteten und mich auf ihren Sofas unterbrachten. Tom hat mich als höchstwahrscheinlich erste NY-Touristin, im Cabrio mit Country-Musik durch Brooklyn chauffiert und eine Pizzaria nach der anderen angesteuert. Ein wahres Amerikaerlebnis. ...and thanx to Kim's old Stanford friend's I really got to enjoy it so much. They saved me from the worst hostel I have ever seen by letting me stay in their houses. And I was probably the first tourist being driven through Brooklyn in an old convertible while listening to country-music. Hard-core America-experience ;) Tom, thank you so much for all the time you wasted for me! Abina, Matthew, Ian, Stephen, Bill, Martins and Claytons - you made my "holidays with natives" perfect. I'd be pleased to show you guys around in Tokio soon!
Nach einer Woche mit so wunderbar unkomplizierten Menschen fühlt sich Tokio ein wenig einsam an. Aber meine Kollegen gaben mir auch wieder ein herzliches Willkommen. Und so habe ich nun einen weiteren großartigen Ort auf dieser Welt entdeckt und war sicher nicht das letzte mal da. Being back in Tokio after a whole week with such wonderful people around is kind of sad. Human relations are so much more complicated over here. However, my co-workers gave me hearty welcome today too. So I found another great place in this world and I'll be back for sure. Tokyo Wisdom
Diese Werbecampagne ziert momentan viele Tokyoter Plakatwände. Zuerst hielt ich sie für eine Provokation aber je länger ich diese Poster und die Menschen um mich herum sehe, um sehr mehr bezweifle ich, dass außer den paar schockierten Ausländern hier irgendjemand etwas Verwerfliches daran findet. Niemand greift sich plötzlich an die eigene Nase. - Was sicher auch nicht das Interesse der Firma EPOS war. - Ganz im Gegenteil, man erkennt es als Lebensweisheit, der zu folgen man ohnehin bereits bemüht ist. This commercial can be found all over Tokyo at the moment. I took it for a provocation at first sight. But the longer I see it and the people around me, the more I start to think that nobody - besides shocked foreigners - gives it a thought. For Tokyoties there seems nothing reprehensible about it. - The company EPOS wouldn't have probably wanted that either. - To the contrary it is taken as a worldly wisdom that everybody follows anyway... HirodenWer hätte gedacht, dass es im hochtechnisierten Japan, in welchem ein Gebäude mit 20 Jahren schon hochbetagt ist und Millionen Menschen täglich in Hochgeschwindigkeit durch die Verkehrsknotenpunkte geschleust werden, noch so was nostalgisches wie Straßenbahnen gibt. In Tokyo findet man bei langem Suchen noch zwei kleine Straßenbahnlinien. In kleineren japanischen Städten (nach japanischen Städtemaßstab ist selbst Berlin noch keine Großstadt) wie Hiroshima gibt es keine U-Bahnen und deshalb spielen hier die Straßenbahnen noch eine bedeutende Rolle. Die japanische Stadtbevölkerung benutzt im Gegensatz zu den meisten Europäern oder Nordamerikanern öffentliche Verkehrsmittel äußerst intensiv anstelle aufs eigene Auto zurück zu greifen. Eine Vokabel kennt das Japanische für Straßenbahnen übrigens nicht. Sie nennen sie einfach nur „Elektrische“ (Den) und um es zu konkretisieren, wird die erste Silbe des Ortes einfach davor gesetzt:
Hiroshima > Hiroden Tokyo > Toden Enoshima > Enoden
und hier die „Erkenntnis der Woche“ Dresden > ??? (°U°)v 
Would you have expected to find something nostalgic like trams in high-tech Japan? A country where buildings are said to be old after 20 years and where millions of people have to pass the country’s hubs fast & smoothly each day. Tokyo still has two tiny tram-lines but in the smaller cities (any city smaller than Tokyo is small in japanese eyes) like Hiroshima, that usually don’t have a subway system, the traffic is dominated by trams. – Compared to Europe or the US Japan’s city population uses public transport intensely during weekdays instead of private cars. Strangely the japanese language doesn’t know a word for “tram”. They just call it “the Electrical” (Den) and to make it more precise they put the first part of the city’s name in front of it.

I gotta tell you about my new hobby! Since two months I get up at 6.30am every Saturday morning - usually still a bit tipsy from Friday evening parties - to board the back of one of the Panasonic horses far outside in the countryside. Yeah, I am not known for being a horse nerd, however it is really fun to me! I'll show you some pictures of me torturing "black beauty" in tight outfit soon - haha...Until than get inspired by this philosophical mistranslation which in fact seems to be the concept in some Japanese company's processes...
